    Description

This is a super cool axe or hatchet that most likely at the newest is from around the 1700s but could be earlier. The iron hand-forged axe head is extremely old and is possibly French but it was found in Pennsylvania. It has a small round stamp with what looks like the letter L. It has a square hammer back with beveled corners and a square eye that the handle fits into. The stamp is on the left side of the axe. This really is a beautiful piece.
The handle is most likely a marriage. It is definitely an authentic American tomahawk handle that probably dates in the 1800s at the newest. The head fits into the handle very tightly. There was a wooden wedge used to keep it tight. The very end of the handle is slightly beveled. The handle at the thinnest point is round and then as it gets higher towards the axe head it becomes more oval and then was shaped to a square. I guarantee this axe handle is very old and not a newly made piece.
The total length is 19.25". The axe head is 8.5" wide. The blade edge is 5".
