1799 Draped Bust Dollar PCGS G06! As you can probably tell from my listings, I am a fan of early silver type coins. Draped Bust dollars are my favorite, probably because it was a 1798 dollar that got me started in coin collecting about 50 years ago. I like coins that are well circulated because I believe they have a story to tell, as opposed to a piece that only spent a few months or years changing hands. That's why so many of my early dollar listings are of relatively low grade coins. I just think it makes things more interesting!
This coin is one such well-circulated piece. I am relatively confident (but not certain) this is a B-21 (BB-169) variety as the obverse diagnostics seem to be an exact match. The coin exhibits grade-commensurate wear on both sides and a touch of striking weakness in the right side of the reverse star field, but I don't see any real signs of die failure or post-striking impediments. It's just a neat old coin that observed decades of use in the channels of commerce, ultimately destined to reside in a nice collection of affordable early silver dollars or type coins. Maybe it passed through the hands of George Washington or Thomas Jefferson, or maybe it became a pocket piece carried by Andrew Jackson. Maybe it was lost during the sacking of Washington during the War of 1812. Who knows? It sure didn't spend its life buried in a cabinet.
I bought this neat early dollar at the Cristal Clear show in Kansas City on April 4th. It's in a fresh PCGS holder, though there is a small chip along the stacking ridge of the holder at the upper left of the back. Insured Priority Mail shipping is free to the lucky new owner!
