GLOUCESTER VIRGINIA MILITIA/MERCER ARTILLERY FRENCH CANNON WORM,YORKTOWN, VA, 1781
This French cannon worm is for the French light 3 pounder cannons that the French sent to the Virginia Militia under Lieutenant Colonel Francis Mercer on Gloucester Point during the Battle of Yorktown in September, 1781.                                                                                                                                              It was used by Sergeant Peter Bell of the Gloucester Militia when he served in the Mercer Artillery during the Siege of Yorktown & at the Battle of the Hook on October 3, 1781.                                                           This worm is French & came with the cannons, is 41 7/8” long with a 3 3/8” long double arm worn x 2 13/16” with a 5 3/8" socket & a 31 5/8” shaft.                                                                                                   It is in good condition with the worm having light/medium pitting & a dark brown patina & is still rusty. The oak shaft is in good condition without any gouges or cracks..
The pair of 3 pounder were used to help defeat the hated British Tarlton Legion at the Battle of the Hook on October 3, 1781.                                                                                   T
he French under General Duc de Lauzun & the Virginia Militia soundly defeated the British who lost over 50 troopers & many horses & driving them back into their fortifications.
They never ventured out again & played no further part in the Siege & Battle of Yorktown.
