The History:
A drink on the house
In the early 1950s, what was then Royal Class enjoyed a première: on intercontinental flights, passengers were given a miniature KLM Delft Blue house. The date stamped on the bottom of these original KLM houses leads us to believe that this took place in 1952.
However, there was a hitch at the beginning. According to strict international rules, only gifts with a maximum value of 75 cents could be given to passengers. Gifts? What gifts? Who's talking about gifts?, was KLM's reaction. At the end of the flight, passengers are offered a last drink on the house. And yes, they come served in a miniature house. The case was brought to court by a competitor but was judged in favour of KLM. After all, the rules said nothing about a drink having to be offered in a glass.
KLM's Birthday
True to tradition, every 7th of October, the day that KLM was founded, the new house is introduced in style. The first one is officially presented to the owner of the real house. Well-known pastry chefs design and create a special birthday cake inspired by the new house.
KLM: 75 years
Despite the popularity of the miniature houses, production was random until 1994: a number of houses were produced one after another, and then none for a few years. In honour of KLM's 75-year anniversary in 1994, an extra 15 houses were produced. This brought the number to exactly 75. Since then, the number of houses in the series has kept pace with KLM's age.
Facts & Figures
Every year, approximately 725,000 miniatures filled with Bols genever, and 100,000 empty houses are loaded on board.
The majority of the original houses that served as models for the KLM replicas were built in Amsterdam: 50 of them!
Did you know that some KLM houses are based on buildings that do not exist? The architectural style of historical canal houses was probably used for the design of these houses.
