Description
An original manuscript letter, dated Department of War, March 30, 1816, regarding settling the account of an officer in the 38th Infantry, signed by TOBIAS LEAR [1762-1816] about six months before his death. He was born in New Hampshire, and a graduate of Harvard. He became private secretary to General Washington in 1785, and handled all of his personal affairs until his death at Mount Vernon in 1799. Later Lear entered to foreign service, and concluded the Treaty of Peace with Tripoli in 1805.
