Description

Ca. 1776 BLACKSMITH FORGED MILITARY REV WAR FELLING AX
(see Neumann and Kravic, Collectors' Illustrated Encyc. of the Amer. Rv., pge26.
#10).
REMARKS: This ax is exceptional in several ways. First it has three blacksmith marks,
perhaps worn hearts. Further the bit is a beveled, with a hewing edge generally used for
flattening logs so they would fit one atop the other. (Possibly the bit was hardened "carbonized"
iron making it more like steel for durability).
Characteristic of the date, 1770's, the poll is truncated and the ears are pointed and
pronounced. The "inhverted tear-shaped" eye is also exactly what one expects.
Size: Poll to bit, about 6 inches.  Bit: 5 3/4 inches
Condition: Surface wear, erosion of original surface in small 1 square
inch area. Overall minor pitting. NO RESHARPENING. Probably cleaned and lightly
coated with a metal preservative at some point.
All in all one of the finest Rev War camp axes one may add to their collection.
Guaranteed as described.
