SENECA WAR CLUB, LAKE CHAMPLAIN, NEW YORK, LATE 1600s/EARLY 1700s, / 1776
This VERY early & quite unique Seneca Indian wood war club captured from a dead Seneca Indian brave by Captain John Davis after a fight with a dozen + Seneca Indians near Split Rock on Lake Champlain, New York in October, 1776.                                            It is 13 7/8” long with a slightly curved, hand carved wood handle with a 3 15/16 ” long x 4 3/16” burled wood knob on top.         It is in good condition with the wood having no cracks, splits or rot & has professionally preserved.                                                      It had been on display in a small private museum in Ticonderoga, New York whose owner’s family had lived in the area since the late 1600’s & had collected local artifacts from the Lake Champlain area for many years.                                                                         It was bought by the famous Collector James Dunn in 1937 who added it to his large collection of New York artifacts.                     It comes with a certificate of authenticity & a Dunn Collection letter.                                                                                                        See the Skene Foundry swivelgun cannonball, listed separately.                                                                                             v
